Darrell Hammond SNL Comeback Slated; Longtime Cast Member To Replace Don Pardo As Announcer

Darrell Hammond's "SNL" comeback has been slated as he got tapped to become the show's new announcer.

Former cast member Darrell Hammond's "SNL" comeback will reportedly involve lending his voice in replacement of Don Pardo. Pardo was the show's announcer since it went on air in 1975 and died last month.

"Saturday Night Live" producer Lorne Michaels reportedly reached out to Hammond to take the place of Pardo. The selection was made in time for the premiere of the show's 40th season.

In an interview with USA Today, Michaels expressed his delight at having Hammond back in the show, albeit in a different capacity. "I'm really happy about it. I think it will be good to have Darrell doing his own separate thing," Michaels said. "It can't be what it was, but it could sort of be in the same tradition. And it will be nice to have Darrell around. He understands the show and will probably be helpful in ways we haven't yet figured out."

Hammond was reportedly very happy to have been chosen and asked to come back. "When [Don] passed, they wanted me; it felt right for me to be the one to replace him," Hammond said. "It's been a very improbable life; I didn't expect something like this, but it feels real good."

Hammond was reportedly the show's longest-running cast member, having been part of it for 14 years.

He debuted on the show in 1995 and was part of it until 2009.

During his stint on cam for "SNL," his impersonations of Bill Clinton and Sean Connery were the ones he is most attributed to.

According to The New York Times, Hammond also substituted for Pardo a few times and lent his voice to the show when the latter could not make it.

The most notable instance when he replaced Pardo temporarily was in 1999, when the latter got sick with laryngitis. He announced the show's introduction as well as performed as Pardo in the opening monologue during the James Van Der Beek-hosted episode.

Hammond left the show in 2009 but made a number of guest appearances.

Darrell Hammond's "SNL" comeback is slated on September 27.
