Lionsgate Acquires Rights To 'The Smosh Movie;' Film Will Feature YouTube Stars Anthony Padilla And Ian Hecox; No Release Date Yet [PHOTO]

Business Insider reports that Lionsgate has acquired the rights to distribute "The Smosh Movie," which is a film based on YouTube stars Anthony Padilla and Ian Hecox (better known to the YouTube community as SMOSH). Padilla and Hecox are a popular comedy duo whose YouTube channel started in 2005 and now has more than 30 million subscribers.

According to Recode, the duo aren't the first Web video stars to try making a movie - the "Fred Movie" starring Lucas "Fred" Cruikshank was produced, but went straight to Nickelodeon instead of theaters. However, Padilla and Hecox are the most popular YouTube stars to ever make a movie. Their website alone generates roughly 12 million visitors a month.

SMOSH is currently aimed at an audience of 13-17 year olds, and their website sells top-selling mobile and game apps. They are best known for their YouTube parody videos, such as "Pokémon in Real Life" and a "What If" series consisting of videos like "If Apps Were Real."

Business Insider reports that the movie script was written by Eric Falconer ("How I Met Your Mother") and will be directed by Alex Winter ("Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure). It will be co-produced by digital content distributor DEFY Media and Awesomeness TV.

A recent press release has described the movie as a "high-concept 'Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure' for 2014," which is somewhat vague. Let's take a look at the plot synopsis: "The Smosh Movie revolves around an embarrassing video of Anthony that resurfaces online right before his fifth high school reunion...Anthony and Ian leap through a portal onto YouTube, and have the adventure of a lifetime as SMOSH encounters one YouTube celebrity after another in their quest to alter a video and change their lives."

It has been announced that the movie will feature other popular YouTube stars, such as Jenna Marbles, Grace Helbig, and Shane Dawson. Recode reports that Lionsgate hasn't publicly committed to releasing the movie in theaters, but that it is planned. As of now, there is no release date.
