‘Supergirl’ TV Series Confirmed: CBS Orders Full Series Deal That ‘Eclipses Fox’s ‘Gotham’ Deal’, Fans Worried CBS Is The Wrong Network

A few weeks ago rumors were flying around that "Supergirl" would be the next heroine to get her own TV series. While the rumors may have been wrong about who was working on the project, it has now been confirmed and ordered. Today it was announced that CBS has purchased a full series for "Supergirl" (name subject to change) in a deal that will be huge for the network. However, some comic book fans are worried that the network is not capable of taking on the project in question and are shocked that the series did not end up with the CW.

"We're well past due for those kind of characters in film and TV," was what series creator Greg Berlanti had to say to Variety about female superheros getting to be the frontrunners as opposed to the sidekicks and love interests. He's not alone in these feelings as even actress Jessica Chastain recently lobbied for a Black Widow stand alone film. With a Wonder Woman cameo on its way, and a new Netflix Jessica Jones series, the latest woman to get her own action TV series will be "Supergirl."

According to Deadline, "Supergirl, Greg Berlanti and Ali Adler's drama based on the DC female superhero, has landed at CBS with a series commitment." They go on to explain that the size of the deal "eclipses the series commitment DC Batman drama Gotham got at Fox last fall. Warner Bros. TV is producing with studio-based Berlanti Prods." That news should effectively quell any anxiety fans may have had about CBS affording a budget that can feature good special effects for a daytime heroine such as "Supergirl."

But fans still seem to be worried that CBS ended up being the network that purchased the project. One commenter on Screenrant states, "This could flop hard. CBS isn't the channel you think of when you think of comic book properties. ‘No Ordinary Family' was a flop. Supergirl will require more special effects than ‘Arrow', way more." Other fans were more forgiving and believe that once more information surfaces about casting they will decide how they feel about CBS handling the project.

No official premiere date has been set but some expect the series to air sometime in 2015. Until then, there's plenty of superheroes coming to TV including "The Flash," "Arrow" and "Gotham," so comic book fans will have plenty to keep busy with.
