Eleanor, meanwhile, works to maintain the New Deal reforms during wartime; and travels to the Pacific to comfort wounded soldiers. In 1943, FDR is diagnosed with congestive heart failure, but decides to hide his condition and seek a fourth term."

The Poughkeepsie Journal explains, "The sixth installment of 'The Roosevelts: An Intimate History' will air on PBS at 8 tonight, Friday. In the episode of the Ken Burns documentary titled 'The Common Cause,' according to press materials, President Franklin D. Roosevelt shatters the third-term tradition, struggles to prepare the country to enter World War II and, after Pearl Harbor, helps set the course toward Allied victory. Meanwhile, Eleanor struggles to keep New Deal reforms alive in wartime and travels the Pacific to comfort wounded servicemen. FDR runs for a fourth term. The seven-part, 14-hour documentary continues through Saturday. Tonight's installment spans 1939-1944."

The New York Times adds, "'The Common Cause (1939-1944),' the penultimate installment in Ken Burns's seven-part documentary series, picks up with Franklin D. Roosevelt (the voice of Edward Herrmann) embarking on a third presidential term as he struggles to prepare the United States to enter World War II. Eleanor (Meryl Streep) tries to keep New Deal reforms alive and comforts wounded servicemen in the Pacific."
