Oscar Buzz: Canada Officially Submits Xavier Dolan’s ‘Mommy’ For Best Foreign Language Film, Marion Cotillard To Secure Win For ‘Two Days, One Night’ Instead?

Arguably the hardest to predict category at the Academy Awards, the Oscar race for Best Foreign Language Film is fully underway as countries continue to announce their formal submissions. Today, Canada has selected "Mommy," a career changing film for young director Xavier Dolan. Additionally, Belgium has added their country to the mix with hope that actress Marion Cotillard can carry the country to victory for her performance in "Two Days, One Night."

Back in March, 25 year old director Xavier Dolan told The Hollywood Reporter that, "Style is just secondary. I think of Mommy as very simplistic, or not simplistic, but I wish for the style to actually work with what you see onscreen, and what you feel in that very moment." That was right around the time that he won the Jury Prize for "Mommy," and now his home country of Canada has lobbied behind his film by selecting it as their official submission for this year's Best Foreign Language Film Oscar.

Given the rave reviews, it's a strong contender for the category. But it will have to face off against another film coming from rave reviews in Cannes starring an actress that the Academy is already familiar with since they gave her an Oscar already. Belgium has selected "Two Days, One Night" starring Marion Cotillard for their entry into the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar race.

If predictions of Best Picture are too early, it's practically never a good time for predictions on which country will take home the Best Foreign Language Film award. Indiewire has comprised a list of the dozens of submissions from countries, in which, there's still no word from major film markets in Asia like Japan and South Korea. That being said, if Xavier Dolan wins for "Mommy," it will be his second major prize for the film at an age where he still has plenty of time left to make films.
