Sierra Leone To End Curfew To Combat Spread Of Ebola Virus, 6 Million People Stay At Their Home During The Lockdown

The streets of Sierra Leone were deserted following a nationwide lockdown, except for an incident where a team has been attacked while conducting a burial, Reuters reported.

Sierra Leone had begun its lockdown on Thursday and ends Sunday, Sept. 21. The lockdown was ordered in an attempt to combat the Ebola virus.

Sierra Leone has asked its over 6 million people to stay inside their believing they could stop the spread of the disease.

Ebola has not only affected Sierra Leone, it has also spread in Guinea, Liberia, and Nigeria, with a recorded 2,600 deaths in West Africa, the BBC article earlier stated.

 Despite Sierra Leone's efforts, the World Health Organization on Thursday said it appears that the disease is continuing its spread, with new cases reported that include in the countries of Congo and Senegal, several news media reported.

On Saturday, a team who was allowed to leave their homes to bury those affected by the Ebola virus and run into a group of youngsters who defied the lockdown, Reuters stated.

Reuters said there are now at least over 5,000 people in West Africa afflicted with the virus, which affected countries like Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia.

Al Jazeera reported that police and soldiers in Sierra Leone were ordered to enforce the curfew and tapped volunteers to help prevent people from leaving their homes.

The World Health Organization said that the disease already killed over 2,000 and could affect over 20,000 with the rate it is spreading. It also added that there are 700 new cases every week.

WHO announced that," the upward epidemic trend continues in the three countries that have widespread and intense transmission: Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone."

WHO has called it the worst Ebola outbreak, and UN Security Council on Thursday called the outbreak a "threat to international peace and security."
