‘Cape Fear’ Star, Polly Bergen Dies At 84

Eighty-four-year-old American actress, TV host, singer, writer and businessperson, Polly Berger died in Connecticut on Saturday.

The Emmy Award winner suffered from emphysema, a condition that damages the alveoli (air sacs) along with other ailments in the late 1990s.

Judy Katz, Polly's publicist said in a statement, "It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of legendary actress and long-time friend and client, Polly Bergen." She died tranquilly at her home in Connecticut, Saturday morning at 11:10 am. She was surrounded by her longstanding personal manager, Jan McCormack, her family and close friends.

Besides being a renowned actress, Polly was also a creative songster, self-help writer and a successful entrepreneur who earned millions by successfully launching her own cosmetics line.

Her performance as Helen Morgan in '"Playhouse 90." earned her an Emmy in 1958. Polly's performance in the 1983 epic, "The Winds of War" and its sequel, "War and Remembrance", fetched her Emmy nomination for best supporting actress.

Besides being a regular on "To tell the truth", a famed game show during the 1950s, she also successfully ran "The Polly Bergen Show", her own NBC variety series. The short-lived show ran from 1957 to 1958.

The veteran actress made her debut in 1950s musical comedy, "At War With the Army" starring opposite Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin. She also starred with the pair in two more comedies, "The Stooge" and "That's My Boy".

Among her other movies are, "Cry Baby" (1990s), "Move Over, Darling" (1963), "Making Mr. Right (1987). She portrayed role of America's first female president in "Kisses for My President" (1964).

Throughout her career, the multi-hyphenate actress was a creative singer and a theater expert. In her career, she released more than a dozen albums.

Polly earned a Tony nomination for her role of Carlotta Campion in "Follies." She made her Broadway debut in a light theatrical entertainer, "John Murray Anderson's Almanac." Comedy play "Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks" marked her return to Broadway following her role in the revival of "Cabaret" in 2002.
