Joseph Gordon-Levitt To Play Edward Snowden In Oliver Stone's 'The Snowden Files;' 'Don Jon' Actor Will Begin Filming This December In Munich [PHOTO]

TIME reports that Joseph Gordon-Levitt - who currently has two films already in the works - will likely be playing Edward Snowden in director Oliver Stone's upcoming biopic. Stone has offered the part to Gordon-Levitt, who in turn accepted it. No formal deal has bet signed as of yet, but both men are eager to make it happen.

Snowden's story is familiar to most people: Snowden was a former US intelligence analyst who released a record number of classified documents. He has been on the run ever since, and has been granted temporary asylum in Russia. If he returns to the US, he faces a 30-year prison sentence.

According to The Guardian, production on "The Snowden Files" will begin late this year or in the early part of 2015 in Munich. The title is taken from a book written by Guardian journalist Luke Harding, and the film looks like it will be based on two different books: Harding's "The Snowden Files: The Inside Story of the World's Most Wanted Man," and "Time of the Octopus," written by Snowden's lawyer Anatoly Kucherena.

Variety reports that Gordon-Levitt has quickly become one of Hollywood's most versatile actors - he is able to jump from action to comedy, and then to serious drama. He recently finished filming "The Walk," a biopic where he plays Philippe Petit, the high-wire artist who famously crossed the World Trade Center Towers. He has also appeared in "Looper," "Don Jon," and "The Dark Knight Rises."

Oliver Stone has also directed biographical political films in the past, including "JFK," "Nixon," "Platoon," "Born on the Fourth of July," "Heaven and Earth," and "W."

Stone may face some competition with his film, as Sony Pictures acquired film rights to Pulitzer-winning journalist Glenn Greenwald's upcoming book "No Place To Hide: Edward Snowden, The NSA, And The US Surveillance State" last month. However, it seems that Stone's movie will be arriving first to the big screen.
