People's Climate March: Over 300K People Turn Out Including Leonardo DiCaprio, Ban Ki-Moon, Mark Ruffalo, And Al Gore; March Seen As A Possible Turning Point [PHOTO]

The People's Climate March took place in New York City yesterday, and had a monumental turnout of over 300,000 people, including movie stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Ruffalo. According to Think Progress, an official count of the march showed at over 310,000 participants - more than triple the original estimation of 100,000. Furthermore, around the world 2,646 events took place in 156 countries.

Ruffalo commented, "I'm here primarily for my children. I want to see the leaders of the world hear the will of the people and begin to implement 100% renewable energy for 100% of the people," further conveying his reasons for marching.

The New York Daily News reports that other participants included Mayor De Blasio, who marched alongside Al Gore and UN Secretary General Ban-Ki Moon, actor Edward Norton, actress Evangeline Lilly, and Sting.

De Blasio commented, "Summits sometimes spark great change; rallies, protests sometimes spark great change. Sometimes they don't... Our mission is to make this a decisive moment and a turning point moment, and I felt today that I was seeing history starting to be made."

Think Progress reports that the march marked the beginning of the lead-up to the international climate summit in Paris at the end of 2015, where leaders hope to reach a new global agreement mitigating greenhouse gases. George Ferguson, mayor of Bristol in the UK, stated, "My expectation is that we will set the scene for Paris next year...If we can show a level of determination and unity at this time it will promise well for real movement next year."

Heikki Holmas, a Norwegian member of Parliament who accompanied Norway's Environmental and Climate Minister Tine Sundtoft to the march, stated, "We all hoped Cophenhagen in 2009 would be the game changer, but at that time the different parties weren't willing and able to reach out hands to each other and realize how much needs to be done... What's happened now, first and foremost, we have the political leadership saying this is actually important. In addition, all businesses apart from the oil and coal industry understand that this is such a big risk to long-term earning that more and more companies want to be part of the solution, not the problem."
