[VIDEO] In Honor Of Upcoming Stop-Motion Film ‘The Boxtrolls’, Here’s Our Top 5 Stop Motion Animated Films

While animated film has recently become dominated by the technology of 3D, it's nice to know that some are still committed to the art form of stop motion. "The Boxtrolls," is the latest stop motion animated film that will arrive to theaters this weekend on September 26th. In honor of the quirky film about tiny creatures living in boxes of junk, here's our top five stop motion animated films.

#5 - "Corpse Bride" directed by Tim Burton

There can't be a stop motion list of any kind without Tim Burton and "Corpse Bride" is just one of the many stop motion masterpieces created by the award winning director. It has his usuals, Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham-Carter voicing two of the characters. Also there's an amazing soundtrack by Danny Elfman. While under most circumstances dancing skeletons might be too creepy to view, dancing jazz band skeletons make for a good time in "Corpse Bride."

#4 - "Paranorman" directed by Chris Butler and Sam Fell

This stop motion film actually combines with 3D technology to make for such an enjoyable film that it was nominated for Best Animated Feature at the 2013 Oscars. Sadly it lost out to 3D fim "Brave" but nevertheless did pretty well in the box office, grossing over $100 million worldwide. For those who have yet to see it, it's a story we probably have all experienced growing up: not fitting in and learning to finally embrace our abnormalities.

#3 - "Coraline" directed by Henry Selick

Every kid has that moment when they really wish their parents were cooler, or that they had lived a different life, but Coraline actually gets to live it and well - the other family turns out to be much worse than her own. "Coraline,' which is based on a popular novel of the same name, teaches the age old lesson about the grass that looks greener, but in an exciting and enchanting way. Also, talking cats always end up being awesome at giving advice.

#2 - "James and the Giant Peach" directed by Henry Selick

As the only film besides "Charlotte's Web" to successfully make people like spiders, "James and the Giant Peach" involves giant bugs, a little boy, and a giant peach. They're all elements that sound like Tim Burton may have had something to do with it, but it was Selick at his one of his greatest stop motion moments. The film got an Oscar nomination for the music by Randy Newman but nothing else because the category for Best Animated Feature didn't exist yet.

#1 - "The Nightmare Before Christmas" directed by Henry Selick (Tim Burton wrote it and produced it, contrary to popular belief)

While it probably looks suspicious that Henry Selick directed the top 3 films on this list, it simply can't be helped because there's probably no stop motion film more famous than "The Nightmare Before Christmas." The franchise continues to make money to this day through themed merchandise that is released every year around Halloween. Not to mention there's an amazing soundtrack by Danny Elfman, an Oscar nomination for the visual effects, and an amazing lesson about how just because our idea sounds amazing, it doesn't always mean it will be amazing for the person around us. Sorry Jack Skellington, a Halloween themed Christmas will probably never work. (see reviews for 2006 film "Black Christmas")
