‘Breaking Bad’s Bryan Cranston And Matt Damon In Talks To Join The Cast For ‘The Great Wall’, Will Fight Ancient Mongol Zombies As 15th Century British Soldiers?

For those who thought Bryan Cranston's biggest enemy after the DEA would be "Godzilla," they may find they were wrong. Today it was announced that the Emmy Award winning "Breaking Bad" actor is in talks to star in Zhang Yimou's "The Great Wall." Matt Damon is also reportedly in talks to get a part in the film that contrary to what one might guess, may be about building the Great Wall to keep out zombies and or supernatural forces, in addition to neighboring nations.

Director Zhang Yimou has denied on several occasions that his films are not political. Back in 2004, around the time of the release of "House of Flying Daggers," he said to The Guardian, "The objective of any form of art is not political. I had no political intentions. I am not interested in politics."

This seems to be in contradiction to the actual content of his films, which always seem to be centered around rebellion against some political idea. It would seem that contradiction is going to come to his latest project, "The Great Wall," in which both Bryan Cranston and Matt Damon are reportedly in talks to star in. According to Deadline, the project has been in development purgatory for quite some time and was supposed to star Henry Cavill at one point although production never ended up getting underway.

No new casting has been confirmed for the film, but if either Damon or Cranston come on board, the film will likely continue to garner attention. More interesting though is the subject matter of the film, which is supposed to be an origin story for The Great Wall of China, with a fantastical twist. A.V. Club reports that it is based on an idea from "World War Z" writer Max Brooks, which means that the film may reveal "The Great Wall" was not built just to keep out foreigners, but also supernatural and or undead invaders.

Since Zhang Yimou doesn't believe he makes his films purposely political, having zombies in a film about the quite political "Great Wall," might be just the thing to keep the film from getting the director banned from filmmaking again.
