Twilight Series To Return; Short Films To Be Launched On Facebook

Twi-hards can start rejoicing as the "Twilight" series will reportedly make a return.

After the final movie of the series was shown two years ago, fans thought it was the end of their beloved saga. But the franchise is making a comeback in the form of short films to be shown on Facebook.

"The Storytellers - New Creative Voices of 'The Twilight Saga'" will be a project open to five aspiring female directors who will create mini-movies inspired by the series.

According to a report from the Telegraph, the directors will be chosen and mentored by the saga's author Stephenie Meyer, along with actresses Octavia Spencer, Julia Bowen and Kate Winslet, directors Catherine Harwicke and Jennifer Lee, and producer Cathy Schulman.

"The female voice is something that has become more and more important to me as I've worked in the film industry," said Meyer.

The project is reportedly backed by Women in Film, an organization that helps in promoting female directors.

In an interview with the New York Times, Lions Gate vice chairman Michael Burns explained their decision to revive the series and do so with Facebook as a platform. "We think Facebook is a great way for us to introduce the world of 'Twilight' to a whole new audience while re-energizing existing fans," he shared.

He also hinted that there will be projects for different franchises and films in the future. "This is just the beginning - a template, if you will," he said. "You can probably guess what might be coming next."

Facebook vice president for partnerships Dan Rose issued a statement about the project, saying it was a "great opportunity" for the social network to further the participation of over 150 million people subscribed to the "Twilight" pages.

Details of the contest have not been divulged and are reportedly still in the works, but updates will be posted on Tongal.com, a crowdsourcing website.
