Blood Moon 2014: Second Full Lunar Eclipse Of The Year Will Bring A 'Blood Moon' On October 8; Will Be Nearly The Size Of A Super Moon [PHOTO]

This coming week, a "blood moon" will be appearing - and it's the biggest one so far. CNN reports that the moon will undergo a full lunar eclipse this Wednesday, October 8, and will turn burnt reddish orange in color as a result. The full eclipse will begin at 6:25 a.m. ET, and will last until about 7:24 a.m. ET.

According to NASA, this is the second blood moon of the year, and it will be best seen from the Pacific Ocean and bordering regions. The eclipse will occur right after the perigee - the closest point to Earth in the moon's orbit - and will be nearly the size of a super moon, appearing 5.3% larger than this year's previous blood moon in April.

This particular eclipse marks the second in a series of four lunar eclipses in a row called a "tetrad." The Huffington Post reports that we will experience only eight tetrads this century, and that we won't experience the next tetrad until around 2032 or 2033. CNN reports that tetrads occur in roughly six-month intervals, making the next eclipse likely to occur on April 4, 2015, and the final eclipse to occur on September 28, 2015.

From this information, we can see that tetrads and blood moons are not commonplace. Blood moons attribute their color to the edges of the sun peeking out around the periphery of the Earth in a global sunset shining on the moon, which has to be in just the right position to catch those rays.

And what about this particular tetrad? NASA eclipse expert Fred Espenak stated, "The most unique thing about the 2014-2015 tetrad is that all of them are visible for all or parts of the U.S.A.," explaining that some people outside of the U.S. will not be able to witness the spectacular event. Though the western half of the United States will get a front row seat, those in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East will not be as lucky.
