Weekend Box Office: Ben Affleck Drives David Fincher’s “Gone Girl” Into Number One Over ‘The Conjuring’ Horror Film Spin Off ‘Annabelle’, Denzel Washington In ‘The Equalizer’ Gets #3

This weekend's theaters were overrun by adults looking for fright from a creepy doll and thrills from David Fincher and Ben Affleck. After impressive numbers from early releases on Thursday, "Gone Girl" will take the top spot at this weekend's box office over horror film "Annabelle." The race has been close, but analysts predict "Gone Girl" will sustain it's number one spot from Saturday in order to win the weekend. Meanwhile, last weekend's holdover "The Equalizer" had another successful weekend thanks to it's Oscar award winning lead actor, Denzel Washington.

Award winning director David Fincher recently spoke to NPR about his latest film, "Gone Girl," and whether he'd ever consider directing a comedy.

"I thought Fight Club was a comedy. I sort of thought this movie was funny, too. Look, it takes all kinds, right?" he said.

Whether it's a comedy, or a dark comedy, or a psychological mystery thriller, "Gone Girl" has drawn in a multitude of crowds over the weekend for an impressive debut. According to Box Office Mojo, the film that stars Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike, is set to grab $39 million by the end of Sunday. It's lower than some of the projections that it'd match last year's "Gravity," but still much more than was expected.

The second place spot this weekend went to New Line Cinema's latest horror project, "Annabelle." The film about a creepy doll that brings about chaos in it's wake is set to take in about $37.2 million according to Box Office Pro. While critics are pretty unhappy with "The Conjuring" quasi-prequel, adults looking for some early Halloween celebration poured into theaters to make for a more than solid opening weekend.

Rounding off the top three in the box office this weekend is Denzel Washington in "The Equalizer." After a number one debut last weekend, the action flick that's on its way to full blown franchise is expected to garner another solid $18 million. This is perhaps not that surprising since Denzel Washington remains one of the few Hollywood actors that can draw a crowd of $20 million or more, even with an R-rated film subject.

Overall this weekend is a great start to both Oscar season and the final quarter as both new releases, "Gone Girl" and "Annabell," made higher than expected debuts. David Fincher's thriller starring Ben Affleck is however the only film out this weekend that is now on the fast track to the Dolby Theater in February.
