Christopher Nolan’s ‘Interstellar’ Partners With Google For Immersive Interactive Digital Space Hub, Movie Theaters Unhappy With Film Before Even Seeing It?

Fans of "The Dark Knight Trilogy" and space enthusiasts alike can now get more out of Christopher Nolan's "Interstellar" before it hits theaters next month through a new interactive hub provided by Google. As excited as fans may be for "Interstellar," movie theaters, especially ones that transitioned away from film projection, are not happy with the lengths they'll have to go to project 70mm film versions of the space epic starring Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway.

"I don't want to be the R and D department. I don't have any interest in the research into electronics. What interests me is to use the best technology and that is film," said director Christopher Nolan in an interview at the annual Produced By Conference in 2012 (via The Hollywood Reporter).

Somewhat ironically, however, thanks to Google, there will be more digital interaction for "Interstellar," despite Nolan's lack of interest in technology. Google launched a new interactive digital hub for "Interstellar" this weekend, just a few weeks ahead of the film's theatrical release in November.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, "The search giant has launched the Interstellar Space Hub to bring fans content from across its platforms, including the Google+ social network, Google Play digital store, YouTube and Google for Education. The hub includes a movie ticket buying function, interactive content discovery feature Space Hunt and links to a Solar System Builder app available for download."

While Christopher Nolan fans and space nerds might be excited about the new way to experience "Interstellar," movie theaters are not so excited about being forced to find ways to project the film after moving to digital projection only. Cinemablend reports that Byron Berkley (CEO and President of Foothills Cinemas) and Joe Paletta (CEO and founder of Spotlight Theaters) are both voicing unfavorable opinions about the fact that "Interstellar" will be available in 70mm, 35mm, and 70mm IMAX film options in addition to 4K digital projection.

It's a touchy situation given that some theaters are suffering financially while trying to preserve film among the many other theaters who have moved to digital only. Nevertheless, the new approach to releasing both film and digital versions of "Interstellar" might be a situation that movie theaters can capitalize on.

Christopher Nolan's "Interstellar" will undoubtedly be a marvel regardless of how it's experienced when it hits theaters nationwide on November 7th.
