Upcoming Nokia Phones 2014: Is Microsoft Making A Mistake In Re-Branding Nokia?

For the past weeks, rumor has it that the upcoming Nokia phones for 2014 will no longer bear the Nokia branding, and instead focus on just Microsoft as a brand.

In fact in a report a couple of weeks ago, Microsoft announced the Lumia 730, without the Nokia branding preceding it. The fact that the upcoming Windows 10 will be built even for smartphones only provides more proof that the Redmond giant is really trying to get red of Nokia as a brand.

Unfortunately, there are grave repercussions in this strategy for Microsoft.

First, Nokia is a world-renowned brand and one that is being used by millions, if not billions of people throughout the world, and we're talking about their faeture phones which launched years before Windows Phone was ever conceived. That just means a lot of people trust Nokia phones through the years.

Another problem for Microsoft is that it is not widely known as a top-notch hardware maker. It may be releasing Surface tablets for a couple of years already, but compared to Nokia's decades of experience in the hardware business, the Redmond giant may be losing interest from the market instead of gaining them.

Laslty, the second most notable mobile phone maker in the world aside from Nokia is Samsung. The Korean giant has been developing feature phones years before Apple launched the very first iPhone. And because these handsets are cheap, they remain a target especially for the mass markets in Asia.

When you take away the number one known brand in the world, consumers would easily switch to the second most recognizable phone maker, and tht's not Microsoft.

The Redmond manufacturer may be have a decent plan for the Nokia re-branding, but if they fail to see these three small reasons why doing so would be difficult, they may lose in the long run.
