American Horror Story Season 4: The Freak Show Has Begun; Premiere Episode Gets Lukewarm Reviews

"American Horror Story" season 4 premiered on Wednesday night with a "super-sized" 90-minute episode. While there was a frenzy before it was shown, the series' premiere, which was written by creators Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuck and directed by Murphy, was "not particularly scary, and doesn't even feel that creepy of freakish," according to the New York Times.

"American Horror Story" season 4 is set in the 1950s in Jupiter, Florida. The show opens with Jessica Lange, an "AHS" staple, as German expat Elsa Mars. Much of the first episode, according to Variety, was about Mars, who was shown to be on a quest to finding so-called "freaks" and asking them to join her "Cabinet of Curiosities."She discovers the conjoined Bette and Dot Tattler, played by Sarah Paulson, and convinces them to come with her.

In the first episode we also meet Elsa's assistant, Jimmy Darling, also known as "Lobster Boy." The character played by Evan Peters has flipper-like hands which earn him the said nickname.

We also meet Murphy's "scariest clown of all time," Twisty played by John Carroll Lynch. The towering mute with a permanent grin pumps up the fright as he is introduced as the mastermind of a series of man-slaughtering in the area.

Flavorwire was also lukewarm about the show, saying "Unfortunately, the characters and the setting ... remain far more interesting than the actual narrative. The ploat about the 'freaks' trying to kep their carnival is underwritten, so far, so there isn't much to become invested in even though it ties in with their desire to be included, rather than seen as monsters."

While the first episode of "American Horror Story" season 4 appears to be ho-hum, there are lots more to expect from the "Freak Show." More characters are about to be introduced and twists and surprises have been promised.
