The Hunger Games: The Musical Catches Fire in London; Katniss Everdeen Will Trade Bow and Arrow For Tap Shoes in Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games: The Musical

"The Hunger Games: The Musical?" It was recently announced that Suzanne Collins Young Adult Novel and movie franchise The Hunger Games will hit the London stage in 2016. The Hunger Games Mockingjay - Part I, the third movie culled from the novels by Suzanne Collins, opens this month. Jennifer Lawrence returns to the lead role as the character Katniss Everdeen.

Lionsgate is teaming with Dutch media company Imagine Nation and U.S. based Triangular Entertainment to bring The Hunger Games to the London stage. The Hunger Games theatrical experience will launch in summer.

This doesn't mean Katniss will put down her bow and pick up a tophat and cane and the people of Panem might not be watching as The Hunger Games becomes some kind of American Idol competition. Lionsgate announced that they will launching a stage version of "The Hunger Games" in 2016.

The Hunger Games musical will debut in a brand new theater built just for it. The theater will be next to London's Wembley Stadium.

This isn't the first time popular films have moved to the stage. Disney brought The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, Tarzan, The Little Mermaid, The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Aladdin to live theaters and are planning a theatrical production of Frozen.

The Hunger Games musical will be produced by Robin de Levita, the co-founder of Imagine Nation, along with U.K. promoter Harvey Goldsmith, Triangular Entertainment's Warren Adams, Brandon Victor Dixon of WalkRunFly Productions and entertainment executives Robert Harris and R&R Media's Gary Ricci.

In a statement, De Le Vita said "I'm thrilled to be partnering with an innovative next generation studio like Lionsgate on a property that resonates so deeply with global audiences. The theater is a fantastic medium to bring the many meaningful layers of Suzanne Collins' writing to life."

"Robin de Levita and the entire production team are the perfect partners for extending The Hunger Games franchise into a live theatrical experience. Their creative genius, combined with world-class production values and state-of-the-art technology will provide a uniquely immersive experience for fans around the world," added Lionsgate Chief Marketing Officer Tim Palen in a statement.

The first two installments of the global blockbuster Hunger Games franchise pulled in over $1.5 billion at the worldwide box office.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire was the highest-grossing domestic box office release of 2013. The film was the 10th highest-grossing domestic release of all time.

Suzanne Collins' Hunger Games book trilogy spent six years on the New York Times list of bestsellers. The trilory sold more than 80 million copies around the world. The next installment of the franchise, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1, will be released worldwide on November 21. The film is directed by Francis Lawrence. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 stars Academy Award winner Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth and Woody Harrelson.
