Sony's E-Paper Smartwatch Unveiled As Crowdfunded FES Watch Sporting Simple Lines And Minimalist Approach!

Several reports reveal that Sony has managed to crowdfund the manufacturing process of an e-paper smartwatch.

After Sony's plan of developing an e-paper smartwatch broke covert, last week, the tech industry correlated it to one similar flexible prototype E-Ink smartwatch project named FES Watch. Now, it's clear that the FES Watch is in fact company's secret project, according to Sony spokesperson.

While speaking to the Wall Street Journal on Friday, Sony's spokesperson confirmed that the Japanese multinational conglomerate corporation headquartered in Kōnan Minato, Tokyo, Japan has a project in development, called 'Fashion Entertainments' (FES), where it is studying how electronic paper can be utilized to make fashion products.

Design Of The Watch

The watch features simple lines and minimalist approach, however, the best part is that the watch is highly customizable. Reports reveal that users can choose one of the 24 different design patterns it offers. The watch features an e-paper wristband that can change the appearance controlled by the gesture of the user.

Compared To Other Smartwatches

The FES watch is a welcome refreshing product in the world of more specs and features oriented smartwatches. The FES watch doesn't come with numerous features like other smartwatches in the market; instead, it is more of a fashion accessory.

Crowdfunding The Device

As the company cleverly used smaller groups, it stayed out of the radar and speculations. Sony used Fashion Entertainment as the company behind the crowdfunding project. The objective of Fashion Entertainment is to figure out the interests of consumers and then forward the information to the main headquarters. Sony planned to raise $17,000 for the watch but it managed to double the initial milestone.

Release Date Speculations

Rumors circulating online point to May 2015 as a earliest possible release date with the June-July more likely time able. It is worth noticing that Sony declines to comment whether the watch will be available for commercial mass production.

Besides having several fitness bands in its portfolio, Sony also offers regular smartwatches, the latest edition being the Smart Watch 3, an Android Wear smartwatch.
