Longtime Sportscaster Shelby Whitfield Dies at 77

Longtime broadcaster Shelby Whitfield passed away Tuesday at a rehabilitation center in Jackson, N.J.

Whitfield born in Texas enjoyed a long career with AP Radio and ABC Radio. He called Washington Senators baseball in 1969 and 1970, later wrote a book titled "Kiss It Goodbye" about the Nats' move to Texas. He hosted radio show featuring guests such as Redskins quarterbacks Sonny Jurgensen and Billy Kilmer.

He became the first sports director at AP Radio in 1970 in Washington. Moving to ABC Radio leading to his retirement in 1997, during that time he oversaw coverage at the Olympics and Triple Crown horse racing, among various sports.
