Alex Smith Traded To Kansas City Chiefs; Kaerpernick Now 'The Man' In San Fran As Chiefs Start Fresh

Fox Sports' Jay Glazer reported on his Twitter account that the San Francisco 49ers have traded quarterback Alex Smith to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Terms of the trade can not be made available until March 12, which is the official start of the 2013 calendar for the NFL.

Glazer followed up his original tweet with this.

Jay Glazer ‏@JayGlazer Deal has been agreed upon between Chiefs and 49ers. Compensation unclear but I'm told again Chiefs have made a clear commitment to Smith.

This deal puts extra assurance to Colin Kaepernick being "the guy" for the team.

The Chiefs are in desperate need of a quarterback after hiring Andy Reid as their new head coach.

Matt Cassel has been the starting quarterback for the past four seasons with Kansas City. The team made the playoffs once with him under center.

This season, Cassel ranked dead last in passer rating. He was last among starters who played most games with the least amount of completions.

Kaepernick pretty much forced the end for Smith with the 49ers. Smith was concussed during a week 10 matchup against the St. Louis Rams. Kaepernick replaced him and held onto the job, even when Smith was cleared to play again.

Cassel had six touchdowns, while Smith had 13 in the same amount of games played. Smith also threw five interceptions in those games, compared to Cassel's 12 thrown. Smith had a 104.1 passer rating, which was a lot higher than Cassel's 66.7.

The 49ers rode the momentum of Kaepernick, before losing in the Super Bowl to the Baltimore Ravens.

Smith was the number one overall pick in the 2005 NFL draft. It was a rocky career for quarterback. It reached the point when he was going one last chance when Jim Harbaugh was named the new head coach for the 2011 season.

Greg Roman joined San Francisco as its new offensive coordinator. Along with Harbaugh, they were able surround Smith with a dominant running game and one of the top defenses in the league. All Smith had to do was not make mistakes. He didn't make too many. Smith lead the league that season with five interceptions thrown.

During Smith's tenure with the 49ers, he had three different head coaches, seven offensive coordinators and 17 different starting wide receivers in his seven season with the team.

Now a solid foundation was put around him.  The team lost in the NFC championship to the Giants, falling short of making the Super Bowl. It has helped Smith land elsewhere.

Nothing positive has come out of this team recently, as the Chiefs finished with the worst record in the league (2-14) and lost one their players when Jovan Belcher took his own life and girlfriend's life on December 1.

The Chiefs have their new head coach and got their new quarterback.
