Ja Rule In Jail; Prison Release Date Set For July After Serving Back-To-Back Time For Weapons Possession, Tax Evasion

Ja Rule is currently in a jail in New York City with a July release date. Federal authorities announced the Ja Rule’s jail release information on Thursday, Feb. 28.

Ja Rule is expected to be released from jail on July 28.

Ja Rule, 36 years old, was released from a state jail in central New York last week after serving the majority of his two-year jail sentence for 2007 illegal gun possession.

Ja Rule had been serving his jail term in protective custody because of his celebrity status.

Ja Rule was convicted for gun possession after NYC police officers found a loaded semiautomatic weapon in his car. The rapper pled guilty to the charge in 2010.

Upon his release for the gun charge, Ja Rule was sent straight to federal custody for a tax evasion case.

He was reportedly eligible to complete the tax-related sentence in a halfway house, where he could begin to make new music. Ja Rule’s lawyer stated that the order to pay $1.1 million in back taxes is the reason that Ja Rule is eager to get back to work as soon as possible.

The Federal Bureau of Prisons says that Ja Rule has since moved from federal custody in an upstate jail to Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center, according to the AP.

The Brooklyn jail holds prisoners awaiting court dates or having only a short time left on their sentences.

The Federal Bureau of Prisons announced on Thursday that Ja Rule’s expected release date from jail is July 28, 2013.

Ja Rule has admitted that he failed to pay taxes on more than $3 million that he earned between 2004 and 2006 while living in New Jersey.

He has been quoted as telling the judge of the federal court during his tax evasion trial, “I in no way attempted to deceive the government or do anything illegal. I was a young man who made a lot of money - I'm getting a little choked up - I didn't know how to deal with these finances, and I didn't have people to guide me, so I made mistakes."
