Rory McIlroy Walks Off Golf Course At Honda Classic: World's Number One Golfer Withdraws From Tournament, Blames Mental State On Wisdom Tooth Pain

Rory McIlroy walked off the golf course Friday, withdrawing from the Honda Classic golf tournament in the middle of a match in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.

"There's not really much I can say, guys," McIlroy told three reporters while he walked off the golf course toward his car. "I'm not in a good place mentally, you know?"

Rory McIlroy is the number one ranked golfer in the world, and the erratic behavior has raised questions about his mental health.

With the Masters a month away, many analysts wonder if McIlroy be in the right frame of mind as he heads into his first major tournament of the year.

The man experts pick as the next man to carry the torch of Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson wasn't having his best outing. McIlroy was seven-over par nearly halfway through the day.

ABC News reported that at the time of his meltdown, McIlroy shook hands with golfers Ernie Els and Mark Wilson, paired up with the player for the day. He then walked off the course before finishing the hole.

An hour after his golf course retreat, McIlroy announced that that tooth pain was causing him to not be in a good place mentally.

"I have been suffering with a sore wisdom tooth, which is due to come out in the near future," McIlroy said in a statement. "It began bothering me again last night, so I relieved it with Advil. It was very painful again this morning, and I was simply unable to concentrate. It was really bothering me and had begun to affect my playing partners."

ABC says McIlroy apologized to the tournament's organizers, telling them he had every intention on defending the Honda Classic title he won a year ago.

Last year's PGA Championship winner and a former U.S. Open winner, McIlroy is looking to win his first green jacket at this year's Masters in Augusta, GA. He has reportedly been in a bit of a slump.

After signing a deal with Nike, McIlroy missed the cut for a tournament, took four weeks off, only to be eliminated in the first round of the Match Play Championship.

Today he wasn't even close to the top of the leaderboard. McIlroy still thinks he's heading in the right direction.

"Even though my results haven't revealed it, I really felt like I was rounding a corner," McIlroy said in the statement. "This is one of my favorite tournaments of the year and I regret having to make the decision to withdraw, but it was one I had to make."
