NFL Players Support Gay Marriage

Linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo of the Baltimore Ravens and punter for the Minnesota Vikings Chris Kluwe are two out spoken NFL players in support of gay marriage.

In 2011 Ayanbadejo filmed and posted a video to YouTube supporting the right for gay and lesbian couples to get married in the state of Maryland.

In the video Ayanbadejo says, "this should not be a subjective issue. Gay and lesbian couples want to marry for similar reasons as we all do, love and commitment.... Having the freedom to marry means committed couples and their children will have the same crucial protections under the law as other families."

He adds, "churches can always have their beliefs, but government is supposed to treat everyone the same and that's equal."

The fight for gays and lesbians to be allowed to marry recently got a push when a group of Republicans came together to get others in their party to help lift the ban on gay marriage in California.

Others however are still under the impression that gay marriage is some how wrong.

Emmett C Burns a state delegate in Maryland and anti gay marriage advocate sent a letter to the owner of the Baltimore Ravens, Steve Bisciotti. In the letter Burns asks that Bisciotti:

"Inhibit such expressions from your employee and that he be ordered to cease and desist such injurious actions."

Fellow NFL player Chris Kluwe saw the letter and sent an angry letter to Burns, and submitted it to deadspin.com.

"I find it inconceivable that you are an elected official of Maryland's state government." Kluwe wrote, "your vitriolic hatred and bigotry make me ashamed and disgusted to think that you are in any way responsible for shaping policy at any level."

Kluwe went on to "outline in great detail" how Burns neglected to consider several key points on regards to gay marriage.

The letter is long and detailed and laced with profane language. It asks Burns: "why do you hate freedom? Why do you hate the fact that other people want a chance to live their lives and be happy?"

"In closing," he writes, "I would like to say that I hope this letter, in some small way, causes you to reflect upon the magnitude of the colossal foot in mouth clusterf*** you so brazenly unleashed on a man whose only crime was speaking out for something he believed in. Best of luck in the next election; I'm fairly certain you might need it."

The letter ends with:

"P.S. I've also been vocal as hell about the issue of gay marriage so you can take your "I know of no other NFL player who has done what Mr. Ayanbadejo is doing" and shove it in your close-minded, totally lacking in empathy piehole and choke on it.

It is a refreshing turn of pace to see players of the NFL, a male dominated sport with a macho-attitude stereotype standing up for such important issues.

The argument today is whether or not banning gays and lesbians from marrying is unconstitutional.

Both Ayanbadejo and Kluwe are supporting the movement to get Prop 8, the California ban on gay marriage lifted.
