Student Suspended After Disarming Gunman On Florida School Bus, 'How They Suspend Me For Doing The Right Thing?'

A high school student in Florida has been suspended for three days after disarming a fellow student.

A 16-year-old boy from Fort Meyers, Florida stepped in to disarm a football player pointing a loaded gun in the face of another student on the bus ride home from school. The following day he was suspended by school officials for three days.

The Cypress Lake High School student, who asked not to be identified for fear of his safety, said the football player was threatening to shoot a teammate with the loaded .22 caliber RG-14 revolver.

The heroic student fought with the gunman and managed to wrestle the firearm away from him. He added there was "no doubt" he saved the targeted student's life.

"I think he was really going to shoot him right then and there," once eyewitness said of the suspect.

The teen's mother said in an interview with local media, "If they wouldn't've did what they had to do on that bus, I think there would have been a lot of fatalities."

Police reports state the suspected gunman was charged with possession of a firearm on school property and assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill.

According to the referral the student received the following day, he was suspended for his role in an "incident" where a weapon was present and given an "emergency suspension."

Florida law allows administrators to place anyone involved in such an incident on emergency suspension pending a hearing.

His mother also added she believes her son was suspended because he was not helping authorities with the investigation. She further reported he was scared for his own safety.

"It's dumb," said the student. "How they going to suspend me for doing the right thing?"

There was no video of the incident because school bus surveillance cameras weren't operational.

Sgt. David Valez of the Lee County Sheriff's Office said an investigation into the incident is ongoing.

The teen was allowed to return to school on Monday.
