Drone Over Brooklyn? FBI, FAA Investigating Sighting, 'We Saw a Drone'

A drone was spotted flying over Brooklyn Monday afternoon. Yesterday a man on an Alitalia flight preparing to land at JFK spotted something alarming outside his window a small unmanned aircraft.

The pilot of Alitalia confirmed the sighting as he was heard saying, "We saw a drone, a drone aircraft," telling controllers on radio calls.

The Federal Aviation Administration and Federal Bureau of Investigation are investing the report from the pilot.

"The FAA is investigating a report... he saw a small, unmanned or remote-controlled aircraft while on final approach to Runway 31 Right," according a statement sent to CNN by FAA spokeswoman Laura Brown. "The sighting was approximately four to five miles west of the airport at an altitude of approximately 1,500 feet," she said.

The Alitalia pilot did not have to take any evasive action and landed safely at JFK.

New York Police Department Commissioner Ray Kelly recently mentioned of procuring drones for use in law enforcement, however NYPD told CNN it had no knowledge of a drone flight on Monday.

The air traffic controllers warned other planes approaching the runway of the drone sighting however no one else seemed to have spotted it.

Although the incident might seem minor, even a small UVA can pose a great risk to large passenger aircraft if they collided or were sucked into an engine.

"The FBI is asking anyone with information about the unmanned aircraft or the operator to contact us at 212-384-1000," said Special Agent in Charge John Giacalone. "Our paramount concern is the safety of aircraft passengers and crew."

The FAA is working to setup new rules and to safely integrate the use of unmanned aircraft in U.S. air space as it established the Unmanned Aircraft Systems Integration Office last year.
