Drone Over Brooklyn: Unmanned Aircraft Comes Within 200 Feet Of A Commercial Jet Near New York City's JFK Airport

A drone over Brooklyn came within 200 feet of a commercial jet headed for JFK Airport from Rome on Tuesday, according to CNN.

The FBI is calling for anyone with information about what could have caused such a close call between the drone and the Alitalia Flight 608 over the densely populated borough of Brooklyn, to come forward.

"We saw a drone, a drone aircraft," the pilot was heard telling air traffic controllers in radio calls captured by the website LiveATC.net.

The FBI as black describes the drone flying over Brooklyn, under three feet wide, with four propellers.

"The FBI is asking anyone with information about the unmanned aircraft or the operator to contact us," said FBI Special Agent in Charge John Giacalone. "Our paramount concern is the safety of aircraft passengers and crew."

A spokesman for the New York Police Department told CNN they were not aware of a drone over Brooklyn. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which operates the airport, referred the cable news station's reporters to the FAA.

The FAA has been working to regulate unmanned aircraft in national airspace like the Drone over Brooklyn, and last year opened an "unmanned aircraft systems integration" office.

The incident between Alitalia Flight 608 and the drone over Brooklyn occurred 1,750 feet off the ground, while the Boeing aircraft was approaching landing at JFK Airport.
