Michael Vick In Dog Training Classes: NFL Star And Infamous Former Dog Fighting Ring Operator Reportedly Taking Class On How To Train His Pet

Michael Vick is taking dog training classes at Pet Smart after purchasing a dog last October.

In 2007, the NFL star was implicated in an illegal interstate dog fighting ring that had operated for five years. In August 2007, Vick pleaded guilty to federal felony charges and served 21 months in prison, followed by two months in home confinement.

When Vick's probation ended last summer, he was legally able to get a dog and he did, so the training classes appear to be an attempt at responsible pet ownership from the football star.

"I understand the strong emotions by some people about our family's decision to care for a pet," Vick said in a statement at the time. "As a father, it is important to make sure my children develop a healthy relationship with animals. I want to ensure that my children establish a loving bond and treat all of God's creatures with kindness and respect. Our pet is well cared for and loved as a member of our family. This is an opportunity to break the cycle. To that end, I will continue to honor my commitment to animal welfare and be an instrument of positive change."

Vick signed with NFL team the Philadelphia Eagles shortly before the 2009 season after his release from prison. He served as a back-up quarterback, served a two game suspension and eventually got his chance to be the starter in Philadelphia.

When starting quarterback Donovan McNabb was traded and his replacement sidelined with a concussion, Vick stepped in and showed signs of his past.

Vick's time with the Eagles has had been injury-plagued, but he signed a one-year deal with the team for the upcoming 2013 season.

At least the dog training classes will ensure Vick will have one four-legged supporter as he attempts to mount a comeback.
