Hugo Chavez Death Provokes Hollywood Tribute: Sean Penn, Oliver Stone Praise The Venezuelan President, Dead From Cancer At Age 58

Hugo Chavez died from cancer at the age of 58 on Tuesday.

Chavez's death caused hundred of supporters to pour out onto the streets mourning the Venezuelan president's death, according to CNN.

Hollywood celebrities Sean Penn and Oliver Stone were among those who praised Hugo Chavez in the wake of his death.

"Today the people of the United States lost a friend it never knew it had," Penn said in a statement to the Hollywood Reporter. "And poor people around the world lost a champion. I lost a friend I was blessed to have. My thoughts are with the family of President Chavez and the people of Venezuela."

A Hugo Chavez supporter for years, Penn attended a candlelight vigil for the Venezuelan president in Bolivia in December.

Venezuelan elections will reportedly be held in 30 days. Vice President Nicolas Maduro, who first announced Chavez's death, will hold power in the interim.

"We must unite now more than ever," Maduro said Tuesday, following news of the leader's death.

Former former Venezuelan presidential candidate and opposition leader, Henrique Capriles Radonski, also called for his fellow citizens to join together.

"This is not the time for difference," he said. "It is the time for union. It is the time for peace."

Penn says he believes the vice president will guide Venezuela in the right direction.

"Venezuela and its revolution will endure under the proven leadership of Vice President Maduro," Penn said.

Hollywood director Oliver Stone first met Hugo Chavez in 2007.

Stone celebrated Chavez's success in South America in the 2009 documentary "South of the Border."

"'I mourn a great hero to the majority of his people and those who struggle throughout the world for a place," Stone said. "Hated by the entrenched classes, Hugo Chavez will live forever in history...my friend, rest finally in a peace long earned."
