3 Bodies Found On Iditarod Route in Wreckage of Missing Plane in Alaska

Three bodies were found in the wreckage of the missing airplane along the Iditarod Trail on Tuesday.

Searchers located the wreckage where two adults and 10-year-old girl were found dead. The small airplane, Cessna 182 was headed to Takotna, a tiny Alaska village and checkpoint for the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog on Monday morning.

Alaska National Guard spokesperson Kalei Rupp said another plane flying above and along the Iditarod trail lost track of the Cessna somewhere near Rainy Pass.

Alaska State Troopers spokeswoman Megan Peters said by email that the airplane was supposed to drop off the Sorvojas and return to Anchorage to transport more passengers.

As the plane failed to arrive at the expected time in Takotna, people became concerned alerting the officials.

The Alaska Rescue Coordination Center (RCC) was notified and shortly after conducted a search.

"Nothing was spotted, nothing was heard last night," said Senior Master Sgt. Robert Carte, superintendent of the RCC. "Yesterday we conducted what is called a 'hasty search,' extensively looking in areas along the projected flight route known to cause problems for aircraft. Today, we have moved into the 'extended search' in which we have grid assignments to search for aircraft and are searching in a systematic manner."

Alaska State Troopers identified the bodies as pilot Ted Smith, 59, Carolyn Sorvoja, 48 and Rosemarie Sorvoja, 10.
