After Recent Racism At Alma Mater, Lena Dunham Tells Fellow Oberlin College Students To “Protect Each Other”

Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio is the alma mater of Lena Dunham, creator and star of HBO's 'Girls.'  The school has been facing a month long string of racially motivated vandalism.

Dunham, in response to the college's recent racism, went on Twitter and told her fellow "Obies" to "remember the beautiful, inclusive, and downright revolutionary history of the place you call home. Protect each other."

Dunham also Twitted "This really saddens me. The school I remember was the safest place to do you."

The college has been plastered with anti-gay and anti-Semitic vandalism. Posters for black history month were defaced and the message "whites only" was found above a campus water fountain.

There was also a report of the sighting of an individual on campus dressed in a white hood and robe near the school's African Heritage House.

The racist and offensive material found all over the school is a direct contradiction with the reputation the school has of being a liberal political institution.

Oberlin College was founded in 1833 and was one of the first colleges in the United States to admit Black students.

The President of Oberlin College Marvin Krislov canceled classes in order to teach students a "different type of educational exercise." Students of Oberlin College gathered in the campus chapel on Monday for a "day of solidarity."

President Krislov apologized to the students on behalf of the college. "From what we have seen we believe these actions are the work of a very small number of cowardly people."

Students at Oberlin College told the New York Times:

"I was pretty shocked it would happen here," said Sarah Kahl, a 19-year-old freshman from Boston. "It's a little scary."

Cooper McDonald said, "I can't see many of my classmates - any of my classmates - doing things like this."

The police are investigating the incidents at Oberlin College; it is unknown if the vandalism is the work of students at the school or a group of outsiders.
