Willie McGee Hired By Cardinals For Special Assistant of The Minor League

Willie McGee hired by the St. Louis Cardinals Wednesday as their special assistant to the general manager John Mozeliak on a permanent basis.

The former outfielder rejoined the team as a special assistant for the 2013-14 season, he declined to work for the team in the past because he wanted to focus his attention on his kids' activities back in his home near San Francisco.

McGee, 54, has been helping the Cardinals for the spring training this year and he spent 14 years with the team from 1982-90 and 1996-99.

"We are pleased to announce Willie's return to the Cardinals organization ... Willie has a wealth of experience in the game, and he is eager to pass on his observations and teachings," said Mozeliak.

Cardinals stated that he will "focus his attention on the minor leagues."

McGee during his career was the National League MVP in 1985 and won batting titles in 1985 and 1990. He complied a batting average of .295 with 79 home runs, 856 RBIs and 352 stolen bases in 2,201 games played.

McGee also ranks in the Cardinals top 10 in games played, triples, stolen bases and pinch hits. He gained attention when he helped the Cardinals win the 1982 World Series.
