Giant Wave Kills 65-Year-Old Tourist In Mexico, Leaves 70-year-old Man In Critical Condition: Freak Wave Reportedly Drags The Pair Out To Sea

A giant wave dragged a pair of U.S. tourists out to sea in Mexico Tuesday, killing a 65-year-old woman and leaving a 70-year-old man in serious condition Tuesday.

State police told the Associated Press that the pair was walking back to their hotel in Cabo San Lucas, when they were hit by the freak wave and dragged out to sea on Tuesday. Navy personnel pulled them out of the water.

The woman was declared dead and the man was still in serious condition Wednesday.

It is unclear of how high the wave was, but a "freak wave" can be at the very least, 25 feet high, Economist Magazine reported in 2009.

Authorities told the AP that the woman had a Wisconsin driver's license and the man had one from Nebraska. The names haven't been released until authorities are able to notify the pair's families.

At least 15 of these giant waves have been photographed or covered by news outlets for tragedies, the magazine says.
