Mariano Rivera May Retire After This Season; Source Says Yankee Legend Will Play One Last Season

This will be the last season for New York Yankees closer, Mariano Rivera, the Associated Press reports.

"I will tell you that I have one more year with the Yankees, 2013 with the Yankees, and I will do my best to try to bring a championship to New York," Rivera said on his first day in camp, the AP reported.

The Yankees told reporters that Rivera will be involved at a press conference Saturday at 10 a.m.

The press conference will be where Rivera will announce that this is his final season playing Major League baseball, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The 43-year-old from Panama is Major League Baseball's career saves leader with 608 saves.

Mariano Rivera helped the Yankees to five World Series titles during his 18-year career.

Rivera is set to make his season debut for the Yankees in Tampa, Fla. on Thursday.

"I know as a player, I always counted backward, how many innings we needed from our starter because of what he was capable of doing," New York Yankees Manager Joe Girardi told ESPN. "There were times when he was a setup man where he would give you more than two innings so if you could get to the seventh the game was over."

Rivera twisted his right knee during his pre-game routine of shagging balls during batting practice, a month into the 2012 season. Mariano, reportedly questioned whether or not to retire, but ultimately decided to come back again for one more season.

"I think he is one of the greatest pitchers of all time, not just a closer," Girardi said. "He is one of the greatest teammates of all time, and he is a lot of fun to catch."

Rivera and Derek Jeter are the only two remaining Yankees from the1995 World Series victory that are still on the team.
