Tuna Recall Expanded to More Than 3 Million Bumble Bee, Including Chicken of the Sea Cans

A recall of Bumble Bee and Chicken of the Sea tuna expanded to more than 3 million of the 5-ounce cans then the initially issued warning earlier this week for the improperly sealed cans at a California plant.

The FDA extended the original nationwide recall of the Bumble Bee tunas sold between January 17, 2013 and February 28, 2013 until March 6.

The initial recall, Bumble Bee Foods SVP of Technical Services and Corporate Quality Assurance Steve Mavity cited "can integrity concerns. Our top priority at this time is to remove these recalled products from distributions as soon as possible."

There are no illnesses reported and fixed the manufacturing line problem that caused the loose seals, the company said.

Bumble Bee expanded the recall to include more which includes 2.4 million cans of tuna, shipped in 51,000 cases up from the 22,500 cases reported earlier, according to Mavity.

"We're voluntarily recalling products to ensure the highest margin of safety and quality," Mavity said.

Tri-Union Seafoods LLC also expanded their recall to include Chicken of the Sea light tuna in oil sold between January 23, 2013 and March 6, 2013.

As of today, the recall also includes 659,784 cans of Chicken of the Sea tuna in water and oil, not just tuna in water as reported earlier, says Erin Mrozek, consumer marketing manager for Chicken of the Sea, owned by Tri-Union Seafoods. Mrozek says the recalled tuna was canned at Bumble Bee's California plant. "Manufacturers will sometimes use third-party suppliers," she says.

The full list of specific code numbers are listed here for Bumble Bee and here for the Chicken of the Sea on the FDA's website posted by the company statement.
