Ex-Detroit Mayor Convicted Over Widespread Corruption in Federal Trial [VIDEO]

Ex-Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick was convicted on Monday of multiple counts of racketeering and extortion. Once considered the nation's youngest city leaders was guilty of 24 charges including racketeering, extortion, attempted extortion, bribery, mail fraud, wire fraud and filing false tax returns.

Kilpatrick, 42, along with his father and a city contract were accused of widespread corruption. He is facing up to a maximum of 20 years in prison during the five-month trial he was portrayed as an unethical politician who turned the mayor's office into "Kilpatrick Incorporated" from 2001 until he resigned in 2008.

The 12 jurors deliberated for 14 days from mid-February in a District Court trial that began last September before announcing their verdict against Kilpatrick, guilty of 24 out of 30 total charges, not guilty on three and no consensus on three more.

Former mayor's father, Bernard Kilpatrick was found guilty on a single count of signing false tax return. Contractor Bobby Ferguson was found guilty of nine out of 11 total counts.

U.S. District Judge Nancy Edmunds thanked the 12 members of the jury before reading the verdict, saying, "These jurors did an extraordinary job."

Kilpatrick was accused of directing more than $83 million worth of municipal contracts to his friend Ferguson, city contractor that shared the money with the former mayor.

Kilpatrick was "grabbing money from the citizens he was elected to serve," said U.S. Attorney Barbara McQuade.

"I am pleased that this long trial has ended and we can finally put this negative chapter in Detroit's history behind us. It is time for all of us to move forward with a renewed commitment to transparency and high ethical standards in our City government," the current mayor Dave Bing said in a statement to the Huffington Post.

The three men posted bail to be free during the trial. Edmunds scheduled a bail hearing for later Monday and did not yet set sentencing dates.
