6-Month-Old Shot Five Times In Chicago Dies Of Wounds, No Leads Or Suspects; Grandmother Asks, “She’s Only 6 Months Old…How Could Anybody?”

A 6-month-old girl was shot five times in Chicago on Monday, March 11. The girl dies of her wounds in a hospital, in a tragic conclusion to the breaking news story.

The 6-month-old and her father were shot in Chicago's Woodlawn neighborhood on Monday afternoon.

DNAinfo Chicago reported that the 6-month-old and her father were wounded in the shooting, which took place at about 1pm on South Maryland Avenue.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's office said that the wounded 6-month-old underwent surgery following the attack, but died of her injuries early on Tuesday morning.

The 6-month-old's father remains in critical condition at Chicago's Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

Both the 6-month-old and her father are the victims of what police think was a drive-by shooting, according to ABC Chicago.

The 6-month-old infant was named Jonylah Watkins, and her father was Jonathan Watkins, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Watkins was reportedly changing the 6-month-old's diaper in the front of a Chevy Venture minivan, minutes after visiting the child's grandmother, when a gunman fired upon the pair.

Jonathan Watkins is reported to have ties to local gangs.

The baby's mother had been shot in the knee while pregnant with the child, according to the woman's mother, Mary Young.

Young said, "There's too much shooting over there. She's nothing but 6 months old. How could anybody -- what kind of heart?"

No suspects are in police custody for the shooting, and police are continuing to investigate.

On Tuesday, police were searching the Woodlawn neighborhood of Chicago for any security camera footage or clues about who may have attacked.

Chicago's homicide rate in February reached a 56-year low. Homicides are also down 26 percent, according to NBC.

On Monday, Police Superintendent Gary McCarthy announced that shootings in Chicago in 2013 are down 19 percent compared to last year.

McCarthy is expected to give an update on this attack later on Tuesday.
