Pennsylvania Sinkhole Forces Evacuation In Bethlehem Township Just A Week After Florida Sinkhole Kills Homeowner

In Pennsylvania, a sinkhole opened up just a week after a Florida sinkhole took the life of homeowner Jeff Bush.

Doris Jenkins of Bethlehem Township, Pennsylvania, discovered a sinkhole in her yard early on Sunday, Marcy 10.

She left her house to walk her dog on Sunday morning when her driveway crumbled into a sinkhole that grew to be about 40-feet wide, according to NBC Philadelphia.

Jenkins, her daughter Inga, and her granddaughter Claudia were all able to escape the Pennsylvania sinkhole free of injury.

Inga told NBC, "I wasn't thinking that this was how I was going to spend my Sunday afternoon."

The Jenkins' home now has cracks in the foundation and possible roof damage.

The family has been forced to leave their home for now, partly because of the fumes coming from the hole, according to Huffington Post.

A neighbor, Courtney Smith, told My Fox Philly that police have told her to be ready to evacuate, also.

She said, "Everybody in the house has bags ready to go."

It isn't yet clear what caused the sinkhole, but Bethlehem Assistant Fire Chief Ron Ford noted that work crews were recently repairing a sewer line break in the vicinity.

Two smaller sinkholes have recently emerged in the surrounding area.

Pennsylvania, in addition to Florida, is considered a sinkhole-heavy landscape.

Temple University Geology Professor Laura Toran told CBS that sinkholes can occur in areas where an easily dissolved rock called karst and subterranean water are plentiful.

"Karst features are underground. Sinkholes clue us in that they're there, and they're interesting in and of their own right because they can transfer contaminants much faster than regular aquifers, and that can be scary, so we have to keep track of where they are," Toran explained.

There is plenty of karst, and thus the potential for more sinkholes, near Lancaster, Northampton, Montgomery and Chester counties and State College, Pennsylvania.
