Iowa Produced 0 Wrestling Champ, First in Seven Years: Frustrated, Second-place Wrestler Throws Medal in Garbage

A seriously disappointed Iowan wrestler throws his medal in the garbage after grabbing only a second place win. It obviously shows that the people of the corn state take the mats as seriously as they take great care of their corn fields.

Anything but a championship interests no Iowan wrestler, especially Matt McDonough, who threw his second-place medal in the garbage.

The Iowa Senior came in second place at this weekend’s Big Ten tournament and was not particularly happy with what he had accomplished. The Daily Iowan’s wrestling reporter, Sam Louwagie, posted at his Twitter account the medal that McDonough threw saying, “This is the 2nd place 125 Pound Big Ten trophy. We found it in the garbage,” with the picture of the medal.

It is the first time since 2006 that no one Iowa wrestler won in the Big Ten event. Wrestling coach, Tom Brands, said that the tournament was a chance for his wrestlers to “stamp” their names on this same wall with past Hawkeye legends, the famed wrestling team of the state university.

McDonough was the first finalist of the night and ended up facing the only opponent who beat him twice: Jesse Delgado of Illionois. As soon as the opening whistle was blown, Delgado dove at McDonough’s ankle and tripped him up for a takedown.

The Illinois sophomore beat McDonough’s defense to his legs for takedowns repeatedly during the entire match. He racked up five takedowns in a 10-4 win. It’s the third loss for McDonough this season, the most he has had. He never spoke to the media after the match, but instead made a bolder statement when it was later discovered that the wrestler threw his medal in the garbage.

The Hawkeye coach said that McDonough needed to have a better handle of Delgado’s quickness in order for him to be able to beat him in the NCAA Tournament and must take advantage of his “cat-chasing tail, go-behind type stuff.” Brands said that the key is “going to be to stop him. He knows what he has to do, but he’s not doing it.”

The wrestler probably did not know exactly what he was doing when he decided that the garbage bin was the best resting place for his winning medal. But at the time, it was neither impressive nor worthy enough for the wrestler.

It is unfortunate that no Hawkeye team member was able to clinch the winning title. The Hawkeye wrestling team of Iowa lost all four of their title matches and finished in third place, 5.5 points behind Minnesota and 17.5 behind Penn State.
