Black smoke wafted out of the Sistine Chapel Tuesday, signaling no new pope just yet.

Tuesday was the first day of voting in the Vatican City of Rome and the cardinals voting for a new pope will have to meet again and try once more.

An ABC News report said the next vote for a possible new pope is Wednesday.

The cardinals retreated to the Sistine Chapel in a choreographed procession with the 115 cardinals eligible to vote marching in two by two while singing prayers. They were dressed in white robes with short red capes and red caps known as birettas as they complied with the ancient rituals of the church and settled into assigned seats beneath the world famous frescoes created by Michelangelo for the papal conclave, ABC News reported Tuesday.

Reuters reported that after each session of voting, the ballots are burned and smoke is emitted from the chapel's chimney, with black smoke signaling that no candidate has been elected in the preceding rounds of votes and white smoke indicating a new pope has been picked.

Only cardinals under 80-years-old can vote and enter the conclave are shut off from the outside world. There's no television, internet, or newspapers. Tuesday morning, the eligible cardinals moved into Santa Marta, the house where they will reside during the conclave.

The so-called "Princes of the Church" will spend the night in a Vatican hotel before returning to the frescoed Sistine Chapel at 9:30 a.m. (0830 GMT) on Wednesday to continue voting, with two rounds set for the morning and two for the afternoon, Reuters reported Tuesday after the black smoke appeared.

The new pope will be replacing Pope Benedict XVI, who stepped down as pope in February.

CNN reported the statement Pope Benedict XVI had on his retirement and resignation as pope at 86-year-old.

"My strengths, due to an advanced age, are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry," the former pope said.
