Ohio High School Football Rape Trial Begins: Two Witnesses Who Allegedly Saw The Victim The Night Of The Alleged Rape Testify In Court

The first day of the Ohio high school football rape trial that captured the country's attention after an Instagram photo of the alleged victim quickly spread across social media, ended Wednesday after two witnesses took the stand, according to the AP.

The two 17-year-old female witnesses allegedly saw the victim being raped during the night of a post-victory football party last August. The witnesses said the victim was so drunk she threw up at least twice and had trouble walking and speaking.

Questions by prosecutors and defense lawyers focused on how much the girl had been drinking that night, the AP reported.

The victim was seen in the Instagram photograph apparently being carried by the two students on trial for sexual assault.

Steubenville quarterback Trent Mays and wide receiver Ma'Lik Richmond are on trial in Jefferson County juvenile court. The pair denied charges that they raped the teenage girl in a car and in a basement with their hands while she was in a dazed state and couldn't consent.

If convicted, Mays and Richmond could reportedly be held in a juvenile detention center until they are 21.

One of the witnesses, a Steubenville High School student, said the alleged victim was having trouble walking but never appeared to pass out. The other witness said she had never seen her friend so intoxicated.
