Cat Food Recall In 25 States, Thousands Of Cats Could Be In Danger

A cat food recall has been issued in 25 states, veterinarians say the food may contain dangerously low levels of Vitamin B1.

Diamond Pet Foods issued a voluntary cat food recall affecting 25 states on Sunday.

BluePearl Veterinary Partners have notified the public of the cat food recall and are now urging people to stop using and return or discard certain bags of cat food.

The cat food recall is for these specific types of dry cat food manufactured by Diamond Pet Foods:

  • Premium Edge Finicky Adult Cat Formula dry cat food
  • Premium Edge Senior Cat Hairball Management Formula dry cat food
  • Premium Edge Kitten Formula dry cat food
  • Diamond Naturals Kitten Formula dry cat food
  • 4health All Life Stages Cat Formula dry cat food

Tests conducted by the company showed that the products may have a level of thiamine (Vitamin B1) that is much too low.

Thiamine is an essential vitamin for cats and is necessary for maintaining normal nervous system function.

Symptoms of thiamine deficiency gastrointestinal, neurological, or both.

Early signs may include decreased appetite, excessive salivation, vomiting and weight loss.

In serious cases, where the cat has been deficient for an extended period of time, neurological problems can develop. Symptoms include cervical ventroflexion (bending towards the floor) of the neck, ataxia (wobbly walking), falling, circling and seizures.

"If you have fed your cat with the affected product and notice your cat is not acting right, take him or her to your family veterinarian as soon as possible," said Dr. Laura Gibeon, a veterinarian with BluePearl in New York. "Of course, if it is an after-hours emergency, we would be glad to help at any one of our locations."

Altogether, the products were distributed to customers located in Alabama, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Vermont, Virginia and West Virginia.

People who have the recalled products should return or discard them immediately.
