Clive Burr Dies At 56: Former Iron Maiden Drummer And Multiple Sclerosis Advocate Honored By Peers And Fans After Death

Clive Burr the former drummer for the rock band Iron Maiden, was found to have died in his sleep on the evening of March 12.

Iron Maiden made an official announcement on their website saying, "We are deeply saddened to report that Clive Burr passed away last night. He had suffered poor health for many year after being diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis and died peacefully in his sleep at home."

Clive Burr joined Iron Maiden in 1979 and recorded on the bands first three studio albums, 'Iron Maiden', 'Killers' and 'The Number of the Beast.' Burr left Iron Maiden in 1982 and went on to play with 'Trust,' 'Elixir,' and 'Praying Mantis.'

Former Iron Maiden member Bruce Dickinson said on the website, "I first met Clive when he was leaving Samson and joining Iron Maiden. He was a great guy and a man who really lived his life to the full. Even during the darkest days of his M.S., Clive never lost his sense of humor or irreverence. This is a terribly sad day and all our thoughts are with Mimi and the family"

Burr was diagnosed with MS in 1994. To help their band mate out with hospital and other bills Iron Maiden founded The Clive Burr MS Trust Fund and preformed charity concerts to raise money.

MS, or Multiple Sclerosis, is a disease that attacks the central nervous system. The symptoms can range in severity from mild to debilitating and attack the brain, spinal cord and optic nerves.

According to the National MS Society website each case of MS acts differently in each individual person. A doctor may not always recognize symptoms right a way.

Common symptoms include, fatigue, numbness, coordination problems, pain, dizziness, emotional changes and cognitive dysfunction.

Fans of Iron Maiden and Clive Burr went on Facebook to express their grief over losing such a talented drummer.

"RIP Clive. Your music lives 4ever," said Joel Huuki. Stef Francois posted, "Thank you for having shared your talent."
