Grandmother Says She “Adored” The Teenaged Grandson She Shot To Death; Grandma Charged With Murder

75-year-old grandma Sandra Layne is on trial for fatally shooting her 17-year-old grandson in May 2012.

The grandmother's lawyer says that Layne was in fear of her life and that grandson Jonathan Hoffman was acting erratically at the time of the shooting. The defense also pointed out that Hoffman frequently used synthetic marijuana.

Hoffman was living with his grandma; at the time of the shooting his parents lived in Arizona.

While on the stand testifying Layne spoke in a soft voice and turned to face the jury when she told the court she "adored" her grandson.

Sandra Layne is charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of her grandson. The teen was shot 5 times, once in the left arm, once in the stomach and three times in the chest. The autopsy also showed traces of synthetic marijuana in his system.

The teen was a troubled young man he was taken to the hospital by his grandmother after a drug overdose. Four days before the shooting, he was pulled over given a ticket for possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

The jury heard the boy's frantic 9-11 call telling the operator "My grandma, my grandma, shot me."

The trial is still on going and there is not a lot of detail on what sentence the prosecution is looking to hand down if the jury comes back with a guilty verdict.

Sandra Layne called Jonathan Hoffman her "favorite" grandson and said she still loves him.
