Is Last Year's 'Cherry Blossom Ending' the Biggest Challenger Against Psy?

Recent trends on K-pop charts have been "off the charts" and critics are dumbfounded.

Unexpected resurgence of songs released many months ago are topping the charts, throwing the industry into a whirlwind as it is confounded by the unpredictable interests of the public.

The biggest surprise of all has been Busker Busker's "Cherry Blossom Ending." As of March 23, it is sitting at the top of both M-net and Melon charts. It climbed up to the first place on March 20 and seems en route to a long run in the top of the charts. The fact that no renditions, covers or features were behind the comeback of "Cherry Blossom Ending," released last March, has shocked many critics.

Simply, spring has returned and so has the song. With M-net and Melon charts being mainstream music websites, the return of this song is no fluke.

This phenomenon, which has shamed numerous new releases, is an example of the incredible longevity of a masterpiece that enters a league of its own. Artists waiting to release their new albums are concerned that they will be competing against songs from last year, on top of all other new releases.

Kang Tae-gyu, a music critic stated, "Busker Busker's music stands as a symbol for a particular generation-between teens and early 30's. Rather a fan of a song than artists themselves, the public is returning to the song that struck a chord with them last spring. It is setting a precedent in K-pop."

The outlook for this song is bright as cherry blossom festivals are fas tapproaching. It could expect additional popularity as it becomes a seasonal favorite. The music industry is starting to crown Busker Busker as Psy's biggest challenger as he waits his new release in April, though half-jokingly.

In addition to "Cherry Blossom Ending," a number of other songs topping the charts as well. Placing second on Melon charts is Davichi's "Turtle."
