Facebook has seen a hundreds of thousands of users showing their support for gay marriage with the red equal sign since it appeared Monday on the social networking site.

The Facebook phenomenon is a reimagining of Human Rights Campaign's (HRC) famous equal sign logo in red instead of its typical yellow.

According to the HRC, 100,000 people have shared the red equal sign on Facebook in the last two days.

"By harnessing the passion that equality supporters feel for the freedom of loving and committed couples to marry, the internet is awash in a sea of red - the color of love," HRC Director of Marketing Anastasia Khoo said in a press release. "U.S. Senator Jon Tester, D-Mont., announced his support of marriage equality for the first time by changing his Facebook profile image to HRC's red equal sign and many other public officials have followed suit."

The list of other officials to change their Facebook profile photo to the red equal sign includes U.S. Senators Chris Coons, Al Franken, Mazie Hirono, Frank Lautenberg, Bob Menendez, Chris Murphy, Patty Murray, Bernie Sanders, Brian Schatz, Jean Shaheen, Jon Tester, Mark Warner and Elizabeth Warren.

Celebrities Sophia Bush, George Takei, and Lance Bass as well as bandmates Tegan & Sara also added the red equal sign to their Facebook page.

This week the Supreme Court is hearing two landmark gay marriage cases, perhaps prompting the sea of red equal signs on Facebook.

Many Facebook users created their own memes from the red equal sign.
