Fantasy K-Pop Collab: CN Blue + One Direction

There is absolutely no denying that K-Pop is gaining attention and fans all around the planet. Idol groups have been embarking on international tours performing in the Americas, Europe, and all across Asia. Partly to credit for this global phenomenon is the lack of similar popular music in other countries.

However, there is also no denying that British boy band One Direction is not too shabby for a western alternative. They encompass many of the traits that distinguish K-Pop as a genre.

For starters, One Direction has catchy pop songs that even if you don't consider yourself a fan, you can't help but bop your head to. Then, perhaps more obviously, they are good-looking young guys with fashion sense and it doesn't hurt that they are not afraid to wear matching outfits or take off their shirts. Not to mention thousands of screaming teenage girls left in their wake where ever they go.

Sound familiar?

In terms of sound, One Direction doesn't have the hard dance beats, and their ballads leave something to be desired. So finding an appropriate match up for a K-Pop collaboration was a bit tricky. Until, that is, CNBLUE came to mind.

The four-member Korean idol group has made a name for themselves as being one of the very few idol groups to play their own instruments. The guys of CN Blue tend to stay more with the pop rock rather than the dance pop many of their idol counterparts produce, yet their songs are generally very playful.

Before going into any further comparisons, let's examine two tracks: "Love Girl" by CN Blue and One Direction's "Kiss You."

"Love Girl" was the promotional track for CN Blue's 2011 EP First Step +1 Thank U.

"Kiss You" comes from Take Me Home, One Direction's second album which was released last year.

The musical styles of CNBLUE and One Direction include powerhouse guitar riffs with peppy, yet forceful, choruses. Aside from their musical talents, of which there are many, there also exists a similarity among the members.

CNBLUE (Or, Code Name Blue) get their group name from the different personality traits exhibited by each of the members. B is for 'Burning' and represents lead guitarist Lee Jong-hyun while the L stands for 'Lovely' as exhibited by drummer Kang Min-hyuk. 'Untouchable' Lee Jung Shin is the bassist whereas 'Emotional' Jung Yong-hwa leads the group as the main vocalist.

The same notion goes for those lovable One Direction boys who are similarly described by their distinct personalities; cute, sensible, charming, funny, and mysterious.

One Direction seems like a pretty obvious choice to collaborate with a K-Pop group, but aside from all the commonalities already mentioned, there is one other big reason why CN Blue would be the best idols to work with: neither group is known for their dancing.

So many of the other Korean idol groups rely on strong choreography and superior dancing skills in their performances. CNBLUE and One Direction are different in that they have no problem connecting to the audience with only their music and unique personalities.

That said, a collaborative project with the two groups would definitely be an up beat pop song with rhythm guitars played by both Jung Yong-hwa and Niall Horan. It would probably be a cutesy love song that teenage girls would want to listen to over and over again. And lastly, it would involve no choreography at all.

CN Blue already has a big fan base in the UK, so what do you say, One Direction - how about a collaboration?
