YouTube Glitch Blocks K-Pop Videos By 4Minute, HyunA, B2ST, G.Na In South Korea, Prompts Accusations UMG Label Executives Are Racist

On March 24, K-pop fans in South Korea attempting to watch videos by Cube Entertainment artists 4minute, HyunA, B2ST, and G.Na on YouTube, found the clips had been blocked.

The situation caused an uproar among K-pop fans online, many of whom accused Universal Music Group (UMG), the U.S. distributer of Cube Entertainment, of being behind the YouTube video blockade for racist reasons.

"If you haven't already heard anywhere, UMG is taking away K-pop from international fans," read a widely circulated post on AsianFanfics.com by Khun_Toria entitled "VERY IMPORTANT!! TO ALL KPOPERS READ PLEASE!!"

"Most Cube Entertainment videos have been blocked in the USA and UK.

There are going to be more K-pop videos to be blocked in international countries.

They want to keep K-pop restricted to Koreans like it originally was. I guess they hate the hallyu wave."

"Asian countries have not yet been targeted," Toria continued. "This is pure racism.

Koreans that live in international countries cannot listen to the music of their culture."

The AsianFanfics.com post urged international K-pop fans to use the hashtag #giveuskpop in protest of 4minute, HyunA, B2ST, and G.Na getting blocked in South Korea.

The hashtags #giveuskpop and #UMG then began trending worldwide, according to Billboard Magazine.

"YOU WON'T STOP ME FROM SEEING THE ONES I LOVE THE MOST , YOU CRAZY PEOPLE!" wrote Twitter user @Choiminakox3 on March 27. "This is just so sick."

"[I don't know] why they're restricted [us] from watching the videos," tweeted @choimesha. "It's truly an unfair treatment. #giveuskpop."

K-pop fans also posted angry comments on UMG's Facebook page, leading UMG to respond that they had nothing to do with the K-pop videos being blocked.

"Glitch at YouTube blocking videos," a UMG spokesperson wrote in a statement the label also tweeted on March 24. "We're doing all we can to get them back online."

USG ironically included the hashtag #giveuskpop, being used as a rallying cry online against the record label.

Although the YouTube glitch that blocked the video has since been repaired, the AsianFanfics post accused UMG of a global conspiracy against K-pop that is only just beginning.

"They've already started, and the USA and UK are the first victims of this," Toria wrote. Other international countries such as Canada and Australia will be targeted soon. Cube Entertainment is the first Korean label to have complied with UMG's actions. You will find that if you live in an international country, videos from this company have all been blocked."

Toria called for international K-pop lovers to unite against the major record label.

"This is absolutely retarded," he wrote. "We are K-pop fans and we are proud. The success of K-pop is because of the international fans. Without us, it's only a small number of Koreans."
