Andy Johns Van Halen, Rolling Stones Engineer Dies At Age 61

A staple in the music industry, engineer and producer Andy Johns has died at the age of 61. Guitarist Stacey Blades was collaborating with Andy Johns and confirmed his death to CNN.

"Andy will be sorely missed. He was a good friend, a great producer, and a great guy. The industry will definitely mourn his loss," Blades told CNN.

Andy Johns died Monday April 8. There was no cause of death issued but Blades did say that Johns was hospitalized last week with liver problems.

During his career Andy Johns has worked as a producer and engineer on albums form various iconic rock bands. The list includes led Zeppelin, the Rolling Stones, Television and Van Halen, just to name a few.

Andy Johns is the younger brother of another famous music producer, Glyn Johns. Andy Johns worked on most of Led Zeppelin's albums. According to CNN he was "known for his skill at recording a range of guitar sounds and, especially, John Bonham's room-shaking drums."

On his website Queen's Brain May paid tribute to Andy Johns saying, "Lovely guy -- patient, skilled, funny, encouraging, sharp ... all the qualities you want in someone who is getting your music on to tape."

Andy Johns began his career as a music producer in the late 1960's. A few years later he would get his big brake while working for London's Olympic Studio. Andy Johns worked on Jethro Tull's "Blind Faith," and the Jimi Hendrix Experience's "Axis Bold as love."

Other artist Andy Johns has worked with or influenced went on Twitter to express their sorrow over Johns' death.

Guitarist Slash of "Velvet Revolver" and "Guns N Roses" fame tweeted, "RIP Andy Johns. 1 of the great engineer/producers of our time; Free, Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, the list goes on. He will be sorely missed."

The band "Chickenfoot" posted, "The band and crew were saddened to hear the news of Andy Johns sudden passing on Monday, April 8, 2013. He was a true talent that will be missed by all!"

Tom Keifer wrote, "Lost an amazing person & friend yesterday Andy Johns was truly one of a kind Just heartbroken! Love you brother RIP."
