Tom Cruise opened up about his divorce from Katie Holmes, which took place last summer, on his tour promoting his new sci-fi film Oblivion.

Tom Cruise has been silent about his divorce from the actress until this point. However, Cruise spoke with German television network ProSieben for an interview about his movie and admitted to being taken aback by the ending of his marriage of five years.

"I did not expect that," Tom Cruise said of his sudden divorce.

Holmes announced their separation on June 29, 2012, five days before Tom Cruise's 50^th birthday.

Cruise said, "Life is a challenge. To be 50 and have experiences and think you have everything under control, and then it hits you - that's what life is... Life is tragicomic. You need a certain sense of humor."

After quick divorce negotiations, Cruise and Holmes' lawyers reached a settlement two weeks later. Katie Holmes got custody over their daughter Suri; Tom Cruise got generous visitation rights. Cruise told the interviewer that the divorce gave him "an incredible amount of time to reflect" as he celebrated his birthday.

Now that Cruise is single, he has thrown himself into acting. Apparently, both he and his ex-wife are doing well after the divorce. Cruise's Rock Of Ages director Adam Shankman told Us Weekly last month that Cruise and his ex-wife are doing well and moving on with their lives.

Shankman said, "They are incredibly happy. I've just been emailing with [Tom]. He's coming back. He's shooting [All You Need Is Kill] in London and seems as happy as a clam. I know he sees his daughter.

Homes is doing well in New York City with Suri. The actress recently ended a run on Broadway in the play Dead Accounts and has been promoting her fashion line 'Holmes & Yang.'

Oblivion hits theaters on April 19 and co-stars Morgan Freeman.

Cruise is also starring in Doug Liman's All You Need Is Kill, and he announced that he is "working on the story" for a fifth Mission: Impossible film.
